Volume 18 Issue 10
President’s Corner
As I write this I am sitting in the Pacific Northwest where it is 40 and raining, so
you don’t have to think that Wisconsin is being picked on. Part of what I do for my
job is to be an ambassador for my company and to provide assistance for those
in the company that require my certain expertise. This kind of almost sounds like
being in the Kettle Karvers. We are all ambassadors in that we should always be
a resource for others, both inside and outside the club and tell others of some of
the neat things we do. Please don’t act like an evangelist preacher but like a
friend if some ones asks about what we do. A good example is the huge amount
of work and effort that has been and is still being put forth for the Festival of Trees.
Each and everyone that has contributed can feel a great sense of
accomplishment. Thank you. Looking ahead we have an election to fill some
positions. If some one asks if you are willing to serve please at least consider it.
The hours are not bad and you do get to talk to some interesting people. The
actual decorating of the tree with a bunch of hand carved ornaments. There is the
Christmas potluck and the annual dinner meeting to plan for and attend. All kinds
of fun stuff before we really get into the hibernation portion of winter and that is
really the time when carving fits in real well with the weather.
Notes from the October Meeting
Meeting called to order at 7 p.m. by President Darrell Abston.
Treasurer’s Report:
Harvey gave the Treasurers Report
Reminder: DUES ARE DUE! For just $10.00 per year you can become a member
or maintain your membership in the club. Please pay Harvey Wendorf.
Sunshine: No news to report. Mary Nowacki, the sunshine lady, is off to sunny
Florida! We’ll see her at the December meeting.
Library: A few new items. Please check out the large selection of books, patterns,
etc. that Lori Jarosch has put together for the club. She has it clearly and neatly
displayed at every meeting.
Report on Rick Jensen Santa Egg-head carving class – Several participants were
at the meeting and brought their finished Santa heads. Everyone concurred that it
was a fun class and we were proud of the end results.
New Business:
Festival of Trees: Don Lorier reported that we have collected 217 ornaments for
the tree. AND – there were dozens more brought to the meeting tonight! Everyone
has been so generous with their time and talents. They are all beautiful. Everyone
got to see the box of ornaments donated by Bill Detloff. Jim Derks, Alice Prahl, Neil
Lorenz, LuAnne Schils and Pam Moir are putting the stain and paint on the
ornaments for Bill.
The tree will be 6 ½ feet tall. Richard Young was tricked (no wait – he volunteered!)
into making the tree topper this year. Thank you Richard
Tree Set-Up: We will be decorating the tree at Blue Harbor on Thursday,
November 19 beginning at 8:30 a.m. All are welcome to come and help. Lunch is
brought in for those who help set up.
Woodcraft discount – Darrell talked with the people at the Appleton Woodcraft
shop. They will give a 10% discount to the club in the form of a 10% rebate, not a
10% discount to individuals. In return, some Kettle Karvers must go to open
houses at the store to do demonstrations, talk to people and show their carvings.
Members voted tonight to go ahead with that plan.
Show and tell: Once again there was a table full of wonderful carvings, including
many donations to the festival of trees.
Raffles: And the winners were……Gene Ninedorf – Book, Bernice Ninedorf –
Knife, Show and Tell Raffle went to Al Herwig.
The meeting was adjourned so the members could participate in an open carve of
tree ornaments. Thanks to all who brought wood, cut-outs, etc.
Respectfully submitted,
Pam Moir , Secretary
Dues!

The Notebook:
I talked to a carver at the Plover show this past spring who said he kept a spiral
notebook in his tool bag to take notes at classes and jot down tips from fellow
carvers. I wish I’d started that in 1995 at my first Stu Martin class! -Neil
