President's Message
How are you doing with your ornaments for the Festival of Trees? I am
kind of excited because at our next meeting, October 7th, we will be
carving together as a group to get some ornaments in the almost
finished pile. Most of the time carving is kind of a solitary endeavor
with an occasional friend or two thrown in as a diversion. I like carving
in groups. I enjoy the talking, the banter and jokes that pass between
people who have known each other for years, decades or even just a
few hours. Having lots of people also help you see perspectives from
many angles. Just walk around a group all working on the same
carving and you will see many variations. If I work alone I tend to carve
way too long so that I get stiff shoulders. When I am with a group I
have no problem setting my carving down and see the wonders that
others are bringing to life.
I had the great opportunity to take a Rick Jensen class this past
weekend and amidst the banter, joke telling and groans 9 really cool
Santa heads came to life out of some basswood eggs. It was neat to
wander around the room and see how everyone progressed. I learned
several new carving tricks, heard some new jokes and ate some really
tasty treats that others brought in to share.
I hope that you find the carving at our next meeting an enjoyable
experience. Remember that unless you are a beaver you will have to
bring some tools to carve with. See you at the meeting.

HERE'S AN IDEA!
In order to sharpen small gouges you can make an inexpensive honing
set-up in the following manner:
Use shoe sole leather and 1/4” plywood spacers on a 1/4” diameter
screw that will fit in your electric drill. Use an abrasive such as rouge or
aluminum oxide as a honing medium. Shape the wheel edges with
sandpaper as the discs rotate until the edges fit your gouges. Make as
many shapes as you desire. Discs can be cut with a circle cutter.

Horse Sense
A Horse can't pull while kicking.
This fact I merely mention.
And he can't kick while pulling,
Which is my chief contention.
Let's imitate that good old horse
And lead a life that's fitting;
Just pull an honest load, and then
There'll be no time for kicking.
