President's Corner

Hello all -

This year’s picnic sure made for a nice evening. Maureen
Bruegger and Alice Prahl - who chaired the committee (along with
the help of a few others)—really set up a nice meal and took care
of all the details.  And the weather they ordered up certainly
capped off the perfect event.  It’s always nice to see spouses and
guests that we don’t normally get to talk with.

What did you think of Cindy Cain’s chainsaw carving?  I really liked
her mix of techniques.  The way she used the saw to speed up the
heavy work, yet changed over to a Dremel to do the fine detail.  I
thought she did this in the right combination in order to keep the
roughness of a traditional chainsaw carving, yet adding the refined
touch where needed.

I’d also like to thank Gene Ninedorf for bringing in the relief
carvings he and Bernice made at a class earlier this summer.  Very
well done!   Gene brought in information from the instructor, Greg
Wirtz of Wisconsin Rapids, and stated that Greg would be willing to
come our way to teach a class.  I can’t remember when we had a
class featuring this style, so if there’s interest, I can contact him
and try to arrange something.

Keep a sharp edge,

Neil

Member's News

We have a new little “chipper” in the Kettle Karving Family. His
name is Jayden Robert Wick son of Travis Wick. He was born
August 13, 2008. Congratulations go to Travis and his wife.

Larry Bernauer of  Plymouth has enrolled as a new member of the
club. Welcome, Larry!

DEMO-DEMO-DEMO

The September meeting will have Karen Russell as our guest
presenter. She has been invited to demonstrate the skill of
painting the carved piece. This should prove very interesting for
those of us who are rather timid when it comes to adding color to
our wooden pieces. And hopefully she will have some new
techniques for the seasoned carver and painter among us.

*** ATTENTION ***

Don't forget that starting September 4th there will be an evening
carve at the Sheboygan Senior Center on the first and third
Thursday evening from 5 PM to 8 PM. Cost is $1 per person. This
will happen in the cafeteria. Anyone, senior or otherwise from the
club may attend! The center is located at 428 Wisconsin Ave.,
Sheboygan.

Monday Morning Carve

You already know that there are opportunities for members to
come together and spend time carving. We have the Tuesday
night carve at the Plymouth High School, the Saturday carve in
Plymouth at the Valley Manor Nursing Home and starting
September 4th  on the first and third Thursday there will be an
open carve at the Sheboygan Senior  Activity Center in the
evening.
However, there is another time to carve for the Sheboygan senior
citizen at the Senior Center on the first and third Monday of each
month. This takes place in the morning from 9AM – Noon.
Many of those who attend are members of the Kettle Karvers Klub.
But there are also some who just like to get together and carve
and chat – sometimes mostly chat.
As one who tries to get there on a regular basis I'd like to share
some thoughts about this gathering.
It's always good to see a friend now and then with whom I can
catch up on the latest “news” and compare notes on what is going
on in our lives. There is always one of us who is able to help out or
suggest a carving technique in order to achieve a certain line,
balance or curve to our work.
Ron Feld, a KKK member, possesses an incredible amount of
information when it comes to talking about wood, saws, techniques,
etc. I've really learned a lot just listening to him. Then there's Betty
and Bob who don't make it to the Plymouth meetings for various
reasons. I enjoy seeing them and sharing any klub news they may
be interested in. And I can't forget to mention Al and Laverne
Herwig. Al is so willing to share his work with us. And he can be so
funny! I'm truly amazed at what he is able to think up and create –
some really interesting projects. Al is the person who developed a
memorial piece in memory of Wayne Gilbertson that is mounted on
the wall of the Craft Room in the Center.

What I find most rewarding are the many people who go to the
Center and stop in to see what we are doing. They express
amazement at what the carvers are able to do with a piece of
wood. That encourages me to continue on even though I'm far
from achieving any potential I may have regarding this art form.
So if you are a Sheboygan Senior who is looking for something to
do on  the first and third Monday morning I encourage you to stop
in and see what's happening! (Regarding the Thursday night
carve there is NO AGE or RESIDENCY requirement to attend).

AND........
As the new editor of this newsletter I'm finding that I really have to
tax my brain to fill up the page with worthy items. So I am asking
you to consider sharing any ideas or events that you feel would be
of interest to our KKK members or other carving clubs that can be
printed in this newsletter. I thank you in advance.
