PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
It has been almost 3 weeks since I returned from the carve fest in Evart
Michigan. I was able to finish carving five pieces in five days. Depending
on who you are that may seem like either a lot of carving or not too
much. For me it was just about right. The trick is in picking some
carvings that have lots of detail coupled with some that have a little less.
This strategy coupled with a sharp knife and nightly therapeutic sessions
in the hot tub allowed me to reach my goal of five completed carvings.
As usual I learned a lot by watching some excellent carvers. The
attributes that so impressed me as they worked with us is their skill with
their tools and how unflappable they are with even a piece of wood that
requires extensive redesign work. I hope to show the same skill set and
patience when I teach my bark carving class later on this fall. Three of
us have offered to teach classes and the response has been
overwhelming. Bob Lawrence will teach a class on chip carving and Paul
Tetzlaff will teach a class on humming birds. There will be more to come
as soon as I find out when and where these classes will be held. I will try
to schedule mine in the September or October time frame. The reason
for this time is two fold. First the heat of summer should be done and
people are thinking about carving again. The second is that I will be
between classes.
If you have not already signed up for the picnic please contact Maureen
(892-4195). I hope to see you there.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY
Being good at something does not mean that we do not have to learn it,
do not need to study it, have no reason to prepare for it. On the contrary.
It means that the learning and the study and the
preparation are what it takes to become as good as we appear.

Remembering Don Welti
A few weeks ago Don Welti, a beloved fellow carver and friend, died after
a brief illness. Don was a gentle and kind man who always shared his
talents with other carvers. He and his wife Mary enjoyed many trips to the
John Campbell Folk Art School where Don created many beautiful
pieces. Those of us who carved with him on Tuesdays at Plymouth High
School could not help but be impressed with his work and caught up in
the excitement he felt after one of his trips there.
Don was a good friend and student of Cleve Taylor, a member of the
Caricature Carvers of America. They shared a true friendship and great
respect for one another. Don brought Cleve to Sheboygan County on a
few occasions to hold carving classes for us. Although we tried, we could
never create those complex and gorgeous caricature pieces that Don
did. He made it look so easy!
Don also taught woodcarving for Plymouth Community Education and
launched a few new carvers into the fold. He was patient and generous
with his knowledge and his talents for woodcarving. This quiet and
unassuming man left us too soon and he will certainly be missed by so
many. Our thoughts go out to Mary, Don’s biggest supporter, friend and
loving wife.
Sheboygan Mead Library
October is coming up fast! Don't forget to bring your carvings to the
September meeting for the display we are putting up in the Mead Library
for the month of October. The more pieces we have to exhibit will show
the variety and diversity of the many talents our club enjoys. Please
consider participating in this public relations endeavor. Any questions,
ask Mary Nowacki, 458-5841

FLOYD RHADIGAN CLASS COMING!
It is quite possible that Floyd Rhadigan, president of the CCA (Caricature
Carvers of America), will be coming to our area this Fall. Floyd has an
extensive assortment of rough-outs available and participants can pick
which project they would like to do. Four of us went to a week-long
seminar in Evart,Michigan this June and took his class. We all returned
with some wonderful and whimsical pieces. Come to the September Kettle
Karvers Meeting and we will have them at Show and Tell.
Floyd will be getting back to me soon regarding the date and times for his
class in Sheboygan County. The place is to be determined. The class
would be 3 days. (This may be one evening and 2 full days.) I just wanted
to give you a heads up on this and find out who may be interested. The
cost would be $125.00 plus rough-out. Floyd’s classes are fun and you
leave with some pretty amazing pieces. If you are interested please let
Pam Moir know as soon as possible (565-4177). I should have the final
details available at the picnic on August 4th and again at the September
meeting.

This note was sent to Dianna Witt and is shared with you in case you
may be interested....
“I recently purchased approximately 500 board feet of miscellaneous
hardwoods from a retiring woodworker. Included with the hardwood was a
fair amount of Basswood in dimensions ranging from 4 1/2" x 3"
(approximately square), to 2" x 10" (boards)--the total lengths are
approximately 8 feet. All of the wood was kiln dried to 6% moisture and
does not include any heartwood.
I am thinking that carvers are about the only people who would be the
most knowledgeable about value and who may be interested in the wood
in its current condition. If you know someone who may be interested in
purchasing the wood or perhaps the best method of selling it, I would
appreciate any information you can give me.
I believe this would be a better use of the wood then me having it re-
sawed or planed down to dimension boards. I am not a sales
organization or company, (just a woodworker who's wife keeps asking
what are you going to do with that pile of wood)?
Regards, Tom

ALSO..... Ron Feld was given a number of different woodworking/carving
tools that he thinks may be of interest to anyone wishing to purchase
them. He plans to bring them to the picnic for us to see and purchase.
