Volume 18   Issue 4

President’s Corner

I like a hobby where I can make mistakes, sometimes lots of them.
And unless I tell anyone about the mistakes the results look
acceptable.  I taught scouting skills to young men for a number of
years.  It was pretty simple and straightforward.  There are two
ways of doing things like tying a knot; the right way and the wrong
way.  With carving there is always the third way,  which is to put
yourself into the carving.
The instructor carves a perfect nose and when I carve mine it may
be rounder, thinner, flatter, shorter, longer, bent, crooked or in the
worst case amputated.  I don’t know if it is a lack of eye-hand
coordination, laziness or just plain lack of ability but I can never get
mine to look like the instructor's.  This is part of the fun of carving.
This is where you develop your own style.  There are no mistakes,
just design changes.  These changes are what make the carving
unique to your style.
At the last meeting I listened in wonder as Richard Young
described slicing off chunks of a horse body so it looked right to
him.  Cutting off arms and rotating them until he liked the look.  He
didn’t make any mistakes, just design changes.  He shared a blow
by blow description of what he needed to do to get the carving to
look the way he wanted it.  I thought  it was a really cool piece and
that he did a super job of carving.
We tend to be our own worst critics because we know what
mistakes we made.  Instead, try to enjoy the fact that others may
not see them as mistakes at all but rather part of the overall
design.  This is why I like the third way.  I put part of myself,
hopefully not blood, into the carvings. While it may not look like
what I was trying to make it does look like it is mine.
Darrell

Chip tip from CACW:
Did you ever consider using your rotary tool with a circular felt pad
to remove those pesky “fuzzies” that appear in the corners of cut
basswood? The beauty of using felt is that it doesn't reshape or
remove detail from your carving – it just cleans up your work!
