PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

I have been watching the Olympics and have been impressed with the
skill and the lack of self preservation that most of the competitors
display.  I sit and watch and think,” I could do some of that”.  I know that I
could do 15 km on skis. I once did 55km.  The only thing is,is that they
would have to use a sundial for timing me!  I have come to the
understanding with myself that my body is built for comfort not speed.
That, and when they talk about the grizzled old timers that are still
competing at the ancient age of 37.
I am so glad that I am engaged in woodcarving.  I can sit in a warm
house  watch people throw themselves off of mountains and ski jumps
that scare the sanest of people while creating carvings that people smile
at when they see them.  I am never sure if the smile is because the
carvings are neat or that they feel sorry for me. But I will happily accept
their smile in either event.
I am sure that you have heard the old adage that the reward for a job
well done is more work.  I have completed the carving and painting both
of my cane blocks.  I  proudly mentioned this at the Tuesday night carve.
None of the other carvers there admitted to having completed theirs and
yet I know that they were finished.  I found out later why no one else said
anything.  I had no sooner shut my mouth when Neil came over and
asked me if I would carve a small house as the cane topper for the
Gnome Cane we were going to raffle.  I felt both honored and scared.
What if I carved something that did not even remotely resemble a house.
I was going to decline but I had finished the blocks so I thought, “Why
not. I know how to carve a house”.  Maybe I should say I knew how to
carve gnome houses out of cottonwood bark.  Butternut is a completely
different animal as far as carving, especially the type of houses that I am
used to making.  In the time I have invested so far I could have completed
two bark houses and I am still a long ways from being done. I have
realized that even though for me 37 is long past, I am not a grizzled old
timer in wood carving.  Those old timers taught me a valuable lesson last
Tuesday night.  The lesson is not to say you are done with your cane
blocks until the last minute :-).
That being said please help Neil out with the openings and tasks he still
has for the show.  In other words,”Do as I do” and not as I had written
because actions speak louder then words.
Darrell

NEW MEMBER .. Welcome Judy Larson of Howards Grove! Judy
actually got bitten by the carving bug when she brought her grandson to
our show last year so he could find out if carving was something he might
enjoy. Judy also shared a gnome she carved at the Show and Tell
portion of the meeting.

MEETING MINUTES

Kettle Karver Meeting Minutes for
February 3, 2010

The meeting was called to order by president Darrell Abston. He then
welcomed our new member Judy Larson.

Treasurer’s Report  was given by LuAnn Schils and approved.
Sunshine Report – Mary announced that she sent out get well cards to
two members and shared a very nice letter from Don Welti who is
recovering from surgery. The club wishes Don a speedy recovery and
looks forward to his quick return to carving.
Library Report – Lori received one new magazine for the club.
Saturday Carve -  takes place at the Plymouth High School from 9-12
noon  on the Saturday following the Wednesday club meeting.

Darrell then asked for feedback on the January banquet. Discussion
followed with positive remarks about the meal, good prizes and
convenience of location. It was decided that next year's banquet will be
held there again because of location and price.

Artistry in Wood Show – April 24th. Neil Lorenz is the show chairman.
Harvey Wendorf offered his son to be   one of the demonstrators for the
show. He will demonstrate ‘Rose Engine' machining which is fancy
detailing on carvings.
Three tables have already been rented even before the ads went out.
Neil had small fliers  printed that we could take home and pass out to
people who we think will be interested in attending.
There are cane blocks available for carving as well as two cane toppers
that need to be carved.
We will once again have a raffle table and donations are needed in order
for it to be a success.
Richard Young has volunteered to demo at the Kids Carve table. Another
person is needed to fill this activity for
the kids who want to try their hand at carving.
The chainsaw carver that we planned for the show had to back out due
to health issues. If anyone knows of another person please let Neil know
so that he can contact him/her.
Bob Lawrence had the fliers for the show printed up and one will go out
with the newsletter next month.
There is a new category in the carving competition – walking sticks and
canes.
There was discussion about the ribbons used at the show. Should be buy
in bulk and omit the “novice, intermediate and advanced” lettering in
order to use the ribbons in a variety of ways? Ron Feld offered a ribbon
stamp for club use.

Darrell then announced he had a
resource for basswood that was for sale at a very reasonable price. After
much discussion a vote was taken and the club decided not to purchase
because of the size of the pieces and problem of storage.

Jim Roeder was offering a rolling toolbox for sale for $15.

There then was discussion of Pam's carvings at the Riverview School in
Plymouth. It was questioned whether her work could also be displayed at
the high school in the hopes of attracting the older student. Mary
questioned the possibility of displaying  the club's works at the Mead
Library in Sheboygan. She will look into it and report back at the next
meeting.

Show and Tell – There were many wonderful creative carvings from
angels to walking sticks shared at the meeting. These included ducks,
trees, baby rattles, hearts, gnomes, a lamp, and barrel knife. Most
inspiring and certainly encouraging to keep on carving!

Raffle Winners
Knife – John Schuman
Apron – Neal Lorenz
Hat – Diana Witt
