PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Do you ever get that queasy feeling back in your throat once a year
when the term “friendship cane blocks” is used at the banquet meeting?
It gets worse when several blocks are shoved into your hands and you
stare at them thinking “Now what!”.  If you do, you are not alone.  Each
and every year it happens to me.
I envy people that take and carve 4 faces on the block in about 20
minutes and then chip carve all the untouched surfaces.  I like to carve
but normally I carve narrower sized pieces of wood.  I also have a real
good idea what I plan to carve before I cut the wood.  I always seem to
draw a blank on the 2 x 2 x 2 pieces.  The blocks tend to sit around until
the week before I have to turn them in and I frantically hack away until
something emerges. Once in a while I can almost determine what it is
supposed to be!  My biggest problem is that the carvings have to retain
the hole in the middle so it will actually function as a cane. That rules out
cutting them into 4 weirdly shaped 1 x 1 x 2 sizes that I might actually
carve.
For the past several months I have been carving little gnomes out of the
aforementioned 1 x 1 x 2 pieces of wood and I have gotten pretty quick at
making the little guys come to life.  For the cane block carving I decided
to up scale my gnome and make him a bit bigger. So I asked for and
received a 2 x 2 x 3 piece of wood.  I carved him out on a Tuesday night
and now I have a gnome created from my block to hand in.  It is a nice
feeling to have one of my blocks done a couple of months before the
show. I have one more block to carve and I will be thinking of what to do
with it.

So I suggest that you  start carving your cane blocks soon so you aren't
pressured at  the last minute.
I know that I will probably wait  to paint them a day or two before I am
supposed to hand them in. But painting is a whole different story!
Darrell

MEETING MINUTES

Kettle Karver Meeting Minutes for
January 6, 2010

This was our Banquet meeting at Klemme’s Wagon Wheel in Howards
Grove.
Treasurer’s Report  was given by LuAnn Schils and approved.
The Treasurer’s audit for the year 2009 was conducted by Don Lorier
and Phil Schils. Once again Harvey Wendorf was thanked for a job well
done as our past treasurer and reported a “great audit”.
Saturday Carve – The Saturday after our monthly meeting is the day our
club carve  is held jointly with our “youth carve”. The cost is $1.00 each
time. The group meets at the Plymouth High School Wood Shop Room
C111. If you currently don’t have a  project you are working on there will
be available from one of our members  a small easy   project to work on.
Note: Pam  Moir has set up a display of carved projects at Riverview
Middle School in Plymouth to try to find young people interested in
woodcarving. Any interested students are instructed to sign up through
Plymouth Community Education. The next gathering will be the Saturday
after our club meeting. Hopefully, new students will arrive to learn to
carve. We invite Kettle Karvers to help them out and get them started on
Sat. Feb. 6.

Artistry in Wood Show – April 24th. Neil Lorenz is the show chairman.
The show information has been submitted to carving
publications/magazines. We will need demonstration volunteers. Also,
does anyone have any ideas on how to celebrate the fact that this is our
20th year for the show?
Don handed out cane blocks at the banquet and some have already
been carved. Any ideas on themes? Someone suggested an all Santa
cane. Another suggestion was an all Gnome cane. Blocks will be
available at the Feb. meeting. Please help out by carving a block for the
fundraising friendship canes. Blocks must be done by the April 7th
meeting.
Sy Regan suggested an “Iron Man” type category for the show
competition. There would be 5 categories per carver. There was some
interest in this and we can discuss it at our next meeting.
Harvey suggested his son be a demonstrator for the show: ‘Rose Engine
(?) which is fancy detailing on carvings. We can get further details from
Harvey at the Feb. meeting.

Burning a Bat – Thanks to Phil Schils for helping out a man who wanted
something woodburned on his son’s baseball bat. Phil contacted the man
and helped out with this special request.

Darrell knows of someone who needs a small bird carved. If anyone can
help out contact Darrell.

Door prizes were handed out and the meeting concluded.

See you at the next meeting : Plymouth High School Cafeteria, Wed. Feb.
3. 7:00pm

Respectfully submitted,
Pam Moir, Secretary

Just a note: Please check with Lou Anne to make sure you are up to date
on your membership dues.

You may remember Mary Ann Waldbauer asking the club if we were
interested in donating a group item   or individual item for raffle at the
Cancer Care Fund Raiser. In the past Phil Schils donated a walking stick
that went for $1000.  She is once again requesting help from us to help
make this event a success. If you have any suggestions please mention

The following article was taken from Woodcraft Magazine, page 13,
vol5/no.27,Feb/Mar (09)

Homemade Bandsaw Blocks
The metal guideblocks that come standard with most bandsaws can
create blade damage, heat and friction, or can damage the teeth.
Aftermarket graphite and ceramic guide blocks work well, but before you
buy, consider making your own blocks from any dense hardwood, such
as maple. Like the blade-friendly graphite, hardwood guides can be set
against the blade without risk of damaging teeth or tooth set. When worn,
hardwood blocks can be sanded or trimmed true.
After cutting the blocks to fit, I stand them in a small container with some
WD-40 to allow the end grain to absorb extra lubricant.
